Everywhere I look, I see a point of no return in all facets of humanity.
Recently, I was taken aback to find out that there are homeless students at Warwick University. For a combination of reasons, they have failed to amass the funds to secure an accommodation, and thus have to survive on the streets, or in this case, on campus.
My flatmate’s friend came to our house two times just so he could crash in. And apparently he is not the only one. There are many others who are forced to hide from campus security from midnight til the break of dawn, every day.
I suppose in their desperate attempts to remain undetected, their sleep quality must suffer greatly. I heard of stories of a homeless student woken up in the middle of the night in the Polytunnel at the university’s allotment.
It’s crazy, isn’t it? We have more than enough money to pour into investment schemes for more profits, and marketing schemes to lure gullible international students for some bullshit degrees taught by incompetent lecturers, but we can’t house these homeless students?
Not only that, we actively send out security to kick them out in the middle of the night? That’s punching down to the fullest.
What the fuck is happening in the world now? Why is humanity so cruel to one another?
On the flip side, if one is fortunate enough to not have to deal with homelessness, they have to deal with a cutthroat job market in the midst of an ever advancing monolith of Super Intelligence.
This is a systematic issue, and if we don’t do something now, the consequences will be disastrous.
No one truly cares about AI and technology. Most of us only portray ourselves to be tech-savvy because not doing so would eliminate us out of the job market.
Like who the fuck is thinking about Navier Stokes or some bullshit AI when they can’t even feed themselves?
Why does anyone have to study so much, and have so many BS internships, and learn 67 languages, and know 1000 AI tools just to get a 9–5 job?
So that they can feed themselves?
While these grocery conglomerates are throwing out tonnes and tonnes of food every day?
Do we not see a fundamental problem with this?
I do. And as much as I try and equip myself and improve my odds at this stupid game of making money, I don’t want to live in a world where the average person cannot have a decent life.
I don’t want to do all that jazz just to survive. I used to think the collective power of humanity meant we could all achieve great things.
But it seems that the cream of the crop is hoarded by an ever dwindling population.
So what can you do, really?
I basically have three jobs. I work in marketing for a Venture Studio based in Singapore and Boston. I get paid to write maths puzzles here on Medium. And I also teach mathematics at a tutoring centre in Coventry, United Kingdom.
I am very grateful that things have sort of been working out financially. But it doesn’t feel enough because it’s not.
The income from my blog is unstable. My job at the Venture Studio is a contract, and can be terminated any time.
Tutoring is a 3-way tug of war between parents, tutors and owners. Parents are trying to pay as little as possible, owners are trying to charge as much as possible while paying the tutors as little as possible, and the tutors are trying to earn as much as they can.
It’s about marketing, psychological manipulation, game theory more than actually teaching mathematics. As I have explained and demonstrated time and time again, I teach better than the majority of so-called ‘qualified’ teachers and ‘examiners’.
In the midst of it all, I always remind myself that anyone can die any day.
My life can end tomorrow because tomorrow is a hope, never a promise.
So even though I am building a life for my future, I do not shy away from living life to the fullest right here right now.
I make sure I eat good food and explore the beautiful Nature around me. I like visiting different parts of the UK and taking as many pictures as possible.
I like to try new experiences and I only work because I work to live.
I am not trying to reach some arbitrary goal of x amount of dollars in a year. I just want to experience as much as I can before my eventual departure from life.
Anyway thanks for being here with me today, I wish you a wonderful rest of your day.
Barry
